History of This Shopping Holiday

The origin of this shopping holiday is in China. Singles’ Day always falls on November 11 because the date 11/11 represents four ones, or four singles, standing together. The name literally translates as “single sticks holiday.

Originally called “Bachelor’s Day,” the celebration began among students at China’s Nanjing University around 1993 as a sort of anti-Valentine’s Day. According to one theory, it all started when four single male students of Nanjing University’s Mingcaowuzhu dorm discussed how they could break away from the monotony of having no significant other, and agreed that November 11 would be a day of events and celebrations in honor of being single. These activities spread through the university and eventually to other universities, appealing to both men and women—hence the name change.

Ironically, Singles’ Day now serves as an occasion for single people to meet, with parties and other social gatherings organized; it’s a popular date for weddings, as well. On the date, the Chinese media discusses and covers love-related issues and topics on relationships.

Even though black is the day’s dominant color, some people wear green instead as an “anti-love” message. This day is a great opportunity to let people know you’re single and open to meeting new people, so expect a lot of chance encounters at parties.

The year 2011 marked the Singles’ Day of the Century as this date had six “ones” rather than four, increasing the significance of the occasion. In 2011, an above-average number of marital celebrations occurred in Hong Kong and Beijing on 11 November.

Not an officially recognized public holiday

The event is not an officially recognized public holiday in China, although it has become the largest offline and online shopping day in the world.

Singles’ Day has since caught on in other countries. Each year on February 15, Singles’ Awareness Day (or Singles’ Appreciation Day) is observed. It is a non-official holiday observed by singles. Additionally, it is a companion holiday to Valentine’s Day for those who are single, unmarried, or in a love relationship. It is a celebration of love in all of its manifestations, including love between friends, family, and self-love. Singles Awareness Day is observed by some in retaliation for Valentine’s Day, as a Hallmark holiday, or for other reasons.

The United Kingdom has designated two ‘days’ to celebrate single status. Since Single Awareness Day is abbreviated as SAD, a group of dating professionals decided to create National Singles’ Day to emphasize a more positive tone. It is observed on 11 March with the goal of empowering persons who self-identify as single. It is unknown who is behind SAD in the United Kingdom.

Singles’ Day was intended to draw attention to Alibaba and its e-commerce site Taobao, Forbes reports. It produced $7 million in sales by offering clients discounts of up to 50% off from more than 25 retailers, which is only an insignificant amount in comparison to what the shopping frenzy has created in the last several years.

Customers and businesses alike were ready to take advantage of Alibaba’s growth year after year. A year after going public on the New York Stock Exchange, Singles’ Day set a Guinness World Record for the most 24-hour online sales income earned by a single firm, earning $14 billion.

As more people join in the celebration of this holiday, many companies have taken the opportunity to target younger consumers including businesses such as restaurants, karaoke parlors, and online shopping malls. For example, the Chinese online shopping mall Taobao sold goods worth 19 billion CNY (about US$3 billion) on November 11, 2012.

Sales in Alibaba’s sites, Tmall and Taobao, have reached US$5.8 billion in 2013, US$9.3 billion in 2014, US$14.3 billion in 2015, US$17.8 billion in 2016, and over US$25.4 billion in 2017. JD.com also achieved a sales record of US$19.1 billion in 2017, while Lazada drums up US$123 million.
