Classic Romantic Comedy Movies

Obviously, you want your date night to be enjoyable. So, here are some classic romantic comedies that will not only make you laugh but will also make you fall in love all over again.

Valentine’s Day (2010)

What better Valentine movie to watch than this New Line Cinema film about Valentine’s Day? This romantic film with the same name as the holiday stars an all-star cast that includes Julia Roberts, Taylor Swift, Jessica Alba, Ashton Kutcher, and many others. It’s a sweet film about people experiencing the peaks and valleys of love all on the same day. Throughout the holiday, you’ll see first dates, long-term relationships, young crushes, and reunions.

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

This classic Columbia Pictures rom-com is ideal for anyone who prefers a high-quality, lighthearted film on Valentine’s Day. Couples who started as friends may relate to this film. It’s about two friends (Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal) who begin dating but have difficulty determining their compatibility. What elevates this movie to legendary status is the scene at Katz’s Delicatessen. You shouldn’t miss it!

[Fun fact] In 2019, the deli paid tribute to the legacy of When Harry Met Sally by hosting a scene reenactment contest called “I’ll have what she’s having.”

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

Here’s another Columbia Pictures classic. The story revolves around a childhood promise made between Julianne and Michael, who agreed to marry if they were still single at 28. Unfortunately, Michael proposed to Kimberly, a stunning 20-year-old played by Cameron Diaz, before her 28th birthday. That’s when she realizes she’s falling in love with him, but things get complicated. For hopeless romantics, this movie is essential to viewing.

Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001)

In this Universal Pictures film, Renée Zellwegger plays the awkward heroine Bridget, who struggles with her age, weight, job, lack of a man, and many flaws. As the New Year begins, she begins keeping a diary to gain control of her life. As a result of writing about her adventures and opinions on every subject, her diary becomes the most provocative, erotic, and hysterical book of her life. The brawl between Colin Firth and Hugh Grant makes this classic rom-com memorable.

Pretty Woman (1990)

Here’s another must-see movie for hopeless romantics. Julia Roberts and Richard Gere star in this romantic film about two people who meet and fall in love, even though they come from very different backgrounds. This film is also inspirational because it demonstrates that anyone can find their prince charming, even if it takes a lot of effort. Julia Roberts’ antics, such as her dental flossing, the phrase “Big, huge,” and divot stomping, bolstered this film’s place in cinema history.

Love Actually (2003)

These interconnected stories about the complexities of love may have inspired Valentine’s Day (the film). Universal Pictures, the studio behind Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral, brilliantly executes this multifaceted romantic comedy movie. It’s about nine different relationships in London during the Christmas season. It also has an ensemble cast. So, if you enjoy feel-good holiday movies, this is the one for you.

The Princess Bride (1987)

Are you a fan of romantic fairy tales? This film adaptation of William Goldman’s novel could be for you. It is about a beautiful princess who wishes to live happily ever after with a farm boy, but evil forces kidnap her and take her across the lost lands. They must overcome the evils of Florin’s mythical kingdom to be reunited. This action-packed, plot-heavy film never has a dull moment since it’s loaded with satire and other comedic elements that never get old. Besides that, it is full of quote-worthy passages.

Notting Hill (1999)

This unusual love story between a struggling bookshop owner and a movie star is a modern-day fairytale. The plot begins with a chance meeting over spilled orange juice, which leads to a kiss that blossoms into a full-fledged affair. Given their radically different lifestyles, their relationship suffers. But true love wins in the end. Interestingly, this is where this famous line comes from: “I’m also just a girl standing in front of a boy, begging him to love her.

You’ve Got Mail (1998

The technology in this late-’90s standard may be charmingly old-school, but the message is timeless. After exchanging emails, the quaint bookshop owner falls in love with a chain store owner, a competitor to her business. The magical chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks heightens the romance in this film. Anyone who likes a good love story with a little bit of humor will enjoy this movie.

The Wedding Singer (1998)

Adam Sandler portrays a heartbroken wedding singer smitten by Julia (Drew Barrymore), a young woman who enlists his assistance in planning her wedding. This New Cinema movie stands out because of the ’80s-theme, a catchy soundtrack, nostalgic pop culture references, and outrageous fashion that adds to the already entertaining plot.

The Big Sick (2017)

Adapted from a true story, this award-winning film tells the story of an inter-ethnic couple (Emily and Kumail) who must deal with the difficulties of cultural differences.  While it may seem unlikely that such a story could result in a laugh-out-loud comedy, this film does. It extracts jokes specific to Nanjiani’s own experience but is universally funny. Click here to watch the trailer.

Nonetheless, their paths cross so frequently that he starts to believe that they were meant to be together, even tho their schedules are constantly clashing.

Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement (2004)

With this sequel, Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride director Garry Marshall returns to the Princess Diaries franchise. Mia (Anne Hathaway), still adjusting to life as a princess, graduates from Princeton this time around. Upon returning to Genovia, she learns that she cannot become queen unless she marries within 30 days. So they began vetting her suitors.  In particular, Nicholas (Chris Pine) stands out to Mia, but he’s more interested in the throne than she is until he realizes he has feelings for her.

Hitch (2005)

Hitch (Will Smith) is a date doctor who helps a blundering client (Albert) win the heart of a celebrity (Allegra). While his client advances, Hitch suffers romantic setbacks when his tried-and-true techniques fail to work on Sara, a tabloid correspondent out to snoop on Allegra’s love life. Consequently, if she learns of Hitch’s relationship with Albert, Allegra’s professional life will be devastated. Will Smith’s wit and sense of humor will have you laughing out loud.
