Remembering the Supremo
As the country commemorates today the 157th birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio, it is worthwhile to reminisce who he is, and what were his contributions in the attainment of the Philippine’s freedom from colonization.
Known as the Father of Philippine Revolution and one of the heads of Katipunan, Andres Bonifacio is one of the national heroes who fought against the Spanish colonizers. Accounts say that the level of his education is not comparable to that of other heroes’, like Dr. Jose Rizal or Antonio Luna, but his eager personality and utter love for the country made him a hero we will always remember.
As a boy orphaned at an early age, the young Bonifacio turned himself into a committed worker and took the responsibility of raising his siblings. He would peddle paper fans and wooden canes, work as a clerk at Fleming and Company, and do post-making to earn a living for his family. His inability to afford formal education did not stop him from learning. During his free time at work, he would also keep on reading.
As a member of the Katipunan, he was also enthusiastic to contribute in expanding the organization’s operations through his writings. One of his famous published works is entitled Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa which encourages Filipinos to battle for freedom2. Such work clearly outpoured his patriotism.
The 4th Industrial Transformation: Fiber Internet is a New Need
Just like the Supremo’s when he was still alive, Filipinos and even the whole world are currently on war footing. The ASEAN had initially labeled this year as the “fourth wave of industrial revolution”, but with the COVID-19 pandemic threatening the globe since the first quarter of the year, economies and everyday living were severely impacted.
Freedom was once more shackled. Social distancing, wearing of face masks and shields, and frequent handwashing or sanitizing became the new normal. More so, work and education significantly shifted to new platforms. Businesses operated mostly on a work-from-home setup. Meetings are now digital, the most famous of which is through Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. Similarly, educational institutions switched to a blended learning scheme, with students engaged in distance-learning or e-learning.
E-commerce also saw an exponential increase since purchases and services now all turned online. There was an unprecedented boost in online shopping, food delivery, online banking, and subscription to online professional services (e.g. telemedicine, marketing, etc.). In this new normal, everything turns out to be just one click away.
Andres, the Patriot, is Alive!
Amidst this recent digital revolution, which proved to be difficult for the country, Filipinos have exhibited resilience. Despite the glaring difference in the level of technology that we have, compared to other nations, we are flexible and adaptable to these dynamics of our time.
Filipinos are also known for being creative and resourceful. Despite the gigantic impact of the health emergency, we are always finding ways to make things work just with what we have.
The current educational setup is an example, wherein majority of students attend classes via online meets, while those who do not have gadgets and internet access may opt to proceed with the modular scheme. In this alternative, physical modules are distributed to the students for them to read and answer. After that, it will either be collected from them or be passed by their parents to the school, for checking. It may not be at par with neighboring states but still demonstrates our drive for progress.
With regard to the workforce, most organizations implemented physical work rotation schedules to meet companies’ needs. Transactions were digitized to cope up. Meetings, trainings, and seminars were turned online. Everyone partakes in the collective effort of soldiering on and thriving strong during this difficult time.
With everything being said, each Filipino of this time is indubitably a modern Andres – a patriot loving his country so dearly that he would not allow it to collapse. We have exhibited our national hero’s virtue of enthusiasm, sense of responsibility, conscientiousness, and pag-ibig sa lupang tinubuan. We continuously work hard for our families, our organizations, and ultimately, our nation!
